I-I don't earn that much... and it's just so embarrassing when they look.

Um...I've heard a bunch of ways to deal with stage fright. Have you ever tried to imagine your audience all in their underwear?

Well, maybe something like that can be saved for another time. But I do want to help you build up your confidence.

I don't know. Not yet. But if I could build my confidence, then anyone can.

You...? You mean you were like this once too?

Kind of. See, I grew up idolizing my dad and wanting to be like him. But the problem with that was that I'm not my dad, and he can do things that I can't. He has abilities that I'll never have.

It took a long time, but I finally learned that I can't be my dad, so I should just be myself. He can do things I can't, but I can still become just as good a pilot as him if I focus on the talents I do have. So that's what I've been doing and that's what I will do until the day I retire.

But aren't you nervous you'll mess up?

I don't think about things like that when I'm in the cockpit, and that's the only time it ever matters. All I think about is winning the battle.

That's very strong of you.

Nah, it's not strength. It's just how it is. In the middle of battle, you don't really have time to think about mistakes. You just go out there and do your duty the best that you can.

I can't say for sure, since I don't know him. But it sounds like it may be.

[Pause.]

Okay. Um... what's your favorite dessert?

My favorite dessert? I, uh, guess I'd never really thought about that. Um...

[He ponders the question for a minute.]

If I had to pick one, I want to say red velvet cake.
